Mystery Shipwreck Activity 5 - Objects (Tingle)

The broad arrow on the spike shows that the ship was owned by the British Royal Navy at some point, but we don’t know if it was still a navy vessel at the time of the shipwreck. It was common for the Royal Navy to sell older ships to private British individuals and companies once they no longer needed them.  

Archaeologists use as many sources as possible in order to draw conclusions about the past, because sometimes artefacts (like this spike) can be misleading.  

Skill: Empathetic understanding.  

After examining this object, answer these questions:  

• What does this object tell you about the age and condition of this ship?
• What do you think it would have been like to sail on this ship? Describe how the people onboard may have felt on this ship during bad weather.
