Staples of Kimberley and Pilbara fishing, the makani/yarrwarri can grow to 15 kg but are usually caught at around half that size. This offshore species prefers rigid reefs, but it is not unheard of to find them in estuaries or riverways. 'Silvery speedsters' of the sea, they will often hunt small bait fish and other prey around shallow waters, making them targets for fishermen - easy to spot but not to catch.

It is best to hunt them at the start of a change in tide, as they tend to linger in this transient water state.
