gawutj
Gawutj, called grey sweetlips, are known for its large lips, which increase in size as the fish matures. The bright orange markings that cover the young eventually dissipate with age, becoming small dots decorating the head in a linear pattern.
Gawutj swim in schools or small groups during the day. At night, when they go hunting, each goes its own way to hunt alone. Preferring murkier waters in daylight hours, and open estuaries or bays during night-time hunts, its favourite feeds include small fish and benthic invertebrates.
