Ocean decade

Australia cares for the fourth largest marine estate in the world. As a member of the UN High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, Australia has committed to sustainably manage 100 per cent of the ocean area within our national waters by 2025.

In support of national objectives, the Museum is delivering a series of of public events, programs and exhibitions, and has committed to a ten-year program in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030.

Our Ocean Decade program is a framework for delivering large- and small-scale exhibitions on key topics, and includes public programs and formal learning programs, public talks and panels, digital outreach, visiting vessels, citizen science programs and exposure for small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) developing new technologies and sustainability solutions. It forefronts First Nations perspectives on sustainable futures and includes the impact of changing conditions on our inland and coastal waterways.
