The Australian National Maritime Museum proudly recognises the Sydney Gadigal community’s deep connection to its land, sands, and waters and of their custodianship of Eora – the Greater Sydney region. Deep Time also comprises diverse knowledge of the lands, seas and skies throughout Australia and the Torres Strait. The museum is committed to acknowledging the ongoing responsibilities of all traditional owners of lands and sea country throughout Australia.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island audiences are advised that this website potentially includes photos, recordings, names, and written material of peoples who have may have passed.

Why are we doing this?
Museums need to embrace digital engagement and innovation in a considered and central way to how they design and deliver experiences to their audiences. Digital is not an add-on or a nice to have. It is at the heart of what we do.
Our future audiences are born-digital and have been exposed to sophisticated digital experiences, not only in museums but in every aspect of their life, online and in physical environments.
We are competing with high levels of digital activations that surround us everyday. To stay relevant to audiences we have to create digital experiences that are of the same calibre but do this in a way that makes museums unique places to explore.
The Museum is embracing a new approach to digital engagement and creating internal capacity to create innovative, experimental and compelling digital experiences.
The Corporate Plan clearly states how important digital is to the Museum and calls this a digital first approach. We will place the user at the centre of every experience. The physical gallery spaces will no longer be separate to online but will connect in a way that makes our stories more relevant, accessible and enjoyable, locally, nationally and globally.
What are our goals?
Enhance digital experiences across all our activities
Innovative digital experiences underpin all of our activities, from our story telling, to day to day operations and are CENTRAL TO THE VISITOR and audience experience.
Use a digital first approach
We will EXPERIMENT with a digital first approach, using audience engagement and insights to help deliver compelling exhibitions, programs and online experiences.
The Lab is the centre for digital innovation, testing and prototyping to increase development sharing, knowledge engagement and encourage a co-design practice.
Strengthen our national presence
Digital experiences play a key role in increasing access to our objects, exhibitions and programs across Australia. This enables a greater understanding of maritime heritage and culture nationally.
Enhance and deepen knowledge and experiences and reach NEW AUDIENCES, more people and communities across regional Australia
Be renowned for compelling museum experiences
Implementing a CO-DESIGN approach to the ideation of all projects will place digital at the beginning of the process to ensure a great user experience is achieved across onsite and online
